¿Tormentas Solares Documentadas en Antiguas Tabletas Asirias?
Un equipo de investigación dirigido por la Universidad de Tsukuba combinó observaciones documentadas por antiguos Asirios en varias tabletas cuneiformes -que mencionan inusuales cielos y nubes rojas, con datos de radioisótopos, para identificar tormentas solares que posiblemente ocurrieron alrededor del 660 a.C.
Por ejemplo, una tableta dice, “el rojo cubre el cielo“, mientras que otra menciona una “nube roja“. Estas fueron probablemente manifestaciones de lo que hoy llamamos arcos rojos aurorales estables, consistentes en luz emitida por electrones en átomos de oxígeno atmosférico después de ser excitados por campos magnéticos intensos. Si bien generalmente pensamos que las auroras están limitadas a las latitudes del norte, durante los períodos de fuerte actividad magnética, como con una eyección de masa coronal del sol pueden observarse mucho mas al sur.

Solar Storms Documented in Ancient Assyrian Tablets?
A research team led by the University of Tsukuba combined observations from several ancient Assyrian cuneiform tablets -that mention unusual red skies and clouds, with radioisotope data, to identify solar storms that likely occurred around 679 to 655 b.C., prior to any previously datable events.
For instance, one tablet states, “red covers the sky,” while another mentions a “red cloud“. These were probably manifestations of what we now call stable auroral red arcs, consisting of light emitted by electrons in atmospheric oxygen atoms after being excited by intense magnetic fields. While we generally think that auroras are limited to the northern latitudes, during periods of strong magnetic activity, like those generated by a coronal mass ejection from the sun, they can be observed much further to the south.
