The claim belongs to an Australian specialist, after the publication of new studies that indicate the ozone layer continues to shrink without a known cause. The ozone layer is responsible for filtering up to 99% of ultraviolet radiation.
The ozone layer continues recovering around the North Pole and the South Pole, but not in other latitudes, according to a study published by the specialized journal “Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics.”
Pointing to the recovery of the ozone layer as humanity’s one great triumph of environmental remediation may have been premature, a new report warns.
The ozone concentration -which protects the earth from ultraviolet radiation- continues to be reduced between 60 degrees North and 60 degrees South, which covers the area between Canada and Argentina (or Russia to Australia), where most of the human population lives.
Experts still do not know why this phenomenon occurs, which could have worse consequences than the weakness of the ozone layer at the poles. The first because the concentration of population is greater in those latitudes and second, because in those areas the ultraviolet radiation is greater than in the poles.
“The discovery of ozone reduction at low latitudes is surprising since our current best models of atmospheric circulation do not predict this effect,” says study director William Ball.
Researchers believe that climate change could be changing the atmospheric circulation model, causing a greater amount of ozone to move away from the tropics. Another possible explanation could be the presence of ozone-depleting chemicals containing chlorine or bromine and found in solvents, paint strippers or degreasing agents or a change to air current behavior caused by the accumulation of greenhouse gases.
“Ozone, like atmospheric carbon, is critical to maintaining the survivability of Earth’s solar budget – all of life depends on them being maintained in a tight range. Ozone we need; too much atmospheric carbon we don’t”, said Paul Read from the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute
